The San Diego-based Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105), with embarked Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 35 “Magicians” arrived in Sasebo, Japan for a scheduled port visit, Feb. 28.

While in port, Dewey’s leadership and tactical watchstanders will have the opportunity to meet with counterparts from Sasebo-based amphibious ships to discuss operations that fall under the Up-Gunned Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) concept and upcoming Wasp ESG Indo-Pacific patrol.

Dewey, and with embarked HSM 35,   departed San Diego Feb. 6 and has been operating under Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON 11), the Navy’s forward-deployed amphibious squadron, since arriving in the 7th Fleet area of operations.

During the transit, Dewey has been performing many a multitude of mission sets that will be critical during operations with the Wasp ESG.

"While Dewey has been in transit to the Western Pacific, our Sailors have been training and executing drills to hone our readiness to support the WASP ESG,” said Cmdr.  Anthony Webber, Dewey’s commanding officer.  “We are proud to be a part of this mission and to be working to enhance our Navy’s expeditionary capability."

In addition to briefings and preparations for operations in 7th Fleet, Dewey Sailors will have the opportunity to explore the area, participate in community engagement events, take guided tours, as well as enjoy the local culture and cuisine

“I love Japanese culture, and it’s just a really beautiful place,” said Electronics Technician 3rd Class Rachel Heath from San Diego. “I’m planning on getting out and exploring, eating Japanese food, and going on a hike.”

Dewey, assigned to the Wasp Expeditionary Strike Group, is on a scheduled deployment in the Indo-Pacific region to support training under the U.S. Pacific Fleet's Up-Gunned ESG concept and to serve as a forward multi-mission asset for any type of contingency.
