HONG KONG -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Sterett (DDG 104) departed Hong Kong after a four-day port visit, March 30.
During the visit, Sterett’s crew participated in a multitude of events and tours that were both culturally enriching and allowed for connection to the local community.
"The crew enjoyed exploring this remarkable city, experiencing its rich cultural heritage, and interacting with its generous people,” said Cmdr. Claudine Caluori, Sterett's commanding officer.
The ship’s Religious Ministry Team, along with the ship’s First Class Petty Officers Association and Coalition of Sailors Against Dangerous Decisions, arranged several cultural exchange events, which allowed Sailors to interact with local kids and exchange information about customs and lifestyles.
"Sterett Sailors were incredible ambassadors for both the U.S. and the Navy," said Lt. Cmdr James Ragain, Destroyer Squadron One chaplain. “These cultural exchanges were a great opportunity for the Sailors and kids to share their cultures through arts and sports.”
Many Sailors enjoyed their time in Hong Kong and were appreciative of learning about the culture.
“At the cultural exchanges we got to play sports and practice calligraphy with high school students. We got to play and read to kids at a local kindergarten. No matter where you go in the world, kids are always kids,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Cory Barrow, from Huntington Beach, Calif. “Getting to interact with the people of the city, trying their food, and seeing the attractions; it was just a great and relaxing port visit.”
The San Diego-based Sterett is currently deployed to the Indo-Pacific region in support of the Wasp Expeditionary Strike Group and its patrol with the 31st Expeditionary Unit.
